The denticles on the tarsal claw of this Ephemerella nymph are highlighted in red.

Denticle: Small tooth-like projects, often appearing like serrations on the tarsal claws of certain mayfly nymphs.) and tubercles (

A few (not all) of the abdominal tubercles on this Ephemerella needhami nymph are circled. They are especially large in this species.

Tubercle: Various peculiar little bumps or projections on an insect. Their character is important for the identification of many kinds of insects, such as the nymphs of Ephemerellidae mayflies.) on abdominal segments 4-7 only. It keys to Serratella micheneri, as do some other specimens from the same collection that lacked the dorsal (Dorsal: Top.) stripe.

Brachycentrus americanus (American Grannom) Caddisfly Larva

View 13 PicturesBoth the genus ID (Merritt & Cummins) and species ID (Flint 1984) are pretty confident for this larva, a nice example of a common western caddisfly. It was by far the most abundant insect in my kicknet sample on this trip, and many of the rocks in the fast riffle where I sampled had dozens of these larvae clinging on.

The denticles on the tarsal claw of this Ephemerella nymph are highlighted in red.

Denticles: Small tooth-like projects, often appearing like serrations on the tarsal claws of certain mayfly nymphs.

Dorsal: Top.

Larva: Many classes of aquatic insects, such as caddisflies, midges, craneflies, dobsonflies, alderflies, and many more, are known as "larvae" rather than "nymphs" in their juvenile stages. They have mostly soft bodies rather than hard exoskeletons. These insects also advance through a "pupa" stage before reaching adulthood.

Spinner: There are two winged stages of adult mayflies. They emerge from the water as duns, molt on land (usually) into their fully mature stage, spinners. As spinners, they mate, lay eggs, and die.

Tarsal claws: The claws at the tip of the tarsus, on an insect's "foot."

A few (not all) of the abdominal tubercles on this Ephemerella needhami nymph are circled. They are especially large in this species.
