Posts: 3I’m looking at fly rods and am looking for a 5wt, but I found some sizing on a rod I want that is confusing. I found a 480 and a 590 sizing, are one of these the same as a 5 weight? Thanks.

I believe the 480 rod designation represents a 4 weight 8.0 foot rod and the 590 is a 5 weight 9.0 foot rod.

For what type of fish and where are you planning to fish?

In general to start fly-fishing for trout, panfish and smaller bass a 5 weight 9 foot rod is close to ideal.
