> > A good rod for small stream fishing (Tenkara?)

Music321June 3rd, 2013, 11:12 pm
Posts: 1I'm new to fly fishing, and can cast a fly rod. I have 30 years experience spin fishing, however. I'm wondering what type of outfit to get. As it happens, I have an expensive 4wt 9ft orvis graphite rod, but no other equipment.

I think that this rod might be less than ideal, while being "too much" rod for me.

I can't imagine that I'll be casting much, as I'll be fishing (where I live) streams surrounded by hardwoods, though there are streams in softwood forests up north.

I don't want to go shorter, because then I would have to do much more casting. I'm interested in the Tenkara rods. They're simple and easy to use. The ONLY downsides I can see is that:

1. If I happen to be in the rare situation where I need to make a cast over 22 ft, I'm out of luck.

2. The rod, though it collapses to 22in, is 12 ft long!

Any ideas? thanks.

Hi welcome to the forum.

All situations are different. For example I only fish small trout streams with a maximum width of 40 feet across and many under 10 feet across in the densest woodland known to man. I have never had any trouble casting my 3wt, 5 1/2 foot combo. I can cast out all my line if need but typically stay inside a 30 ft casting range. Unless on large, open, and or still waters it is most often in my opinion not necessary to have any other rod than the one you have. I have used a 8.6 foot rod in small environments without much trouble.

I would use the Orvis. Even in small situation in heavily wooded areas just reduce the leader length to under 7 feet including tippet. You might also use a slightly heavier line on the orvis. Most rods today are sonic fast and not so soft in casting. Heavier line will bring more feel and more loading to the rod giving more control on short casts and more overall feel to you.
