Posts: 1This was a large free living caddis that I found in the Muskegon River in Michigan. It was approximately an inch in length. I was wondering if you could please ID? Thanks!

Hi Kjfeen-

Gorgeous image. I suspect that it may be Rhyacophila fuscula.

Hi Mark,

Thanks for the correction. Although was bothered by its vertical hump, I didn't realize that eliminated the possibility of it being a free-living caddisfly 🙂

Best regards,

Roger

I noticed you identified a caddisfly larva in the Troutnut Forum as a Rhyacophila species. It appears to be a Phryganeidae species. It has a dorsal and lateral humps which would be pointless if it didn't live in a case. Also Phryganeidae larvae are quick to leave their cases when stressed. There are several good photos in Troutnut which point towards Phryganeidae.
