I saw a trico spinner patternrecipe using a TMC 2488 nymph hook. I'm reluctant to tie a dry using a nymph hook as I imagine it might be hard to keep afloat. Anyone have any practical experience using nymph hooks for dries ? Do they float reasonably well ??

Brian, the 2488 and 2487 are fine wire emerger, wet and nymph hooks. A trico spinner tied up using poly wings and tailing materials that aid in floating will make a decent trico spinner. I really don’t mind if the fly is drifting below the surface and I don’t think fish mind either. Another point, your usually using very fine tippet, and some floatant of some kind which aid in the fly floating.
Happy new year, Mike.

Thanks for your thoughts Mike. I do use the 2488H (the heavier wire version) for nymphs - mostly because I like the 3X wide gape - but never tried the 2488 (fine wire version). RE "drifting below the surface" - a few months ago I found a pattern online (somewhere) for a "sunken trico" and tied a few of 'em - though haven't used them yet. :-) Brian

As Mike notes, the 2488 is a fine Trico hook. I know lots of guys who like it for Tricos and midges. I'd also note that the TMC 921 is a great dry fly hook with a wide gap. I use it for olives at times.
