yesterday I landed the fish of my lifetime thus far. I may have landed a heavier or longer fish once or twice in a blue moon... but this one takes the cake. this 10lb class cuttbow was in the riffle, march 1st on a local freestone. great winter flow and very healthy river in the past few years especially. I landed a 5lb rainbow in this riffle (same fish) twice last summer and have heard of browns exceeding 10 lbs being hooked (rarely) in this area.

fortunately for me this fish, (and all the fish in the river that were feeding) was eating large stonefly nymphs. I was able to hook it with a big fly and 3X tippet. a solid 15 minutes to the (too small) net, a quick photo op, and a very robust release.

hope to encounter this fish again.

Edit: trouble

Was there only one image? The one I saw was a thick rainbow on a very cold and snowy day. That rainbow looks like most of the steelhead I catch in the Erie creeks. Meaning it is a really big non migratory rainbow. Gorgeous trout I'm jealous of the fish but not being out in that weather.

hey wbranch,
thanks for commenting. we occasionally hook steelhead size rainbows, pushing 30". mostly on tailwaters with mysis shrimp. the fish (yeah 1 pic so far) pictured above was on a bigger freestone stretch of Colorado river, making it way cooler to me!!

the weather has been pretty stellar for winter fly fishing. that day was in the 40's. this winter though there was a fishing tournament. ice fishing primarily, but the locals fish a canal and a tailwater river stretch as well. anyhow, I fly fished the tournament, in the tailwater at -20f. no kidding. way more mindblowing was the fact that I witnessed fish rising up into the choppy river slush... at -20. I caught some fish nymphing that day.

It helps if you have a photo sharing account to upload photos. Add a left bracket and the letters "img" and a right bracket, then paste the link, then another left bracket, than a back slash, the letters "img" and a right bracket to upload pictures.
