My trout dry flies don't float well after I've used them for about a half hour even if I keep applying silicone cream, dry fly floatant or sprays. What's wrong?

Dry flies require whatever attention they require. Some float a long time, with a minimum of attention, especially those tied with foam. Others have to be dried out, possibly with amadou or some other absorbent pad, and floatant applied frequently--for example, sparse CDC flies. Frog's Fanny type powder can revive some flies that are not too waterlogged. Once a fly is drowned out, it's best to tie on a new one and start over. Different folks have different rituals: some like a liquid floatant such as Flyagra, others prefer powder, some start with a pre-treatment then follow up with powder. Typically success comes with experimentation via trial and error until a satisfactory approach is learned.

BLOW ON 'EM!! Dry them out the old fashioned way...but as Louis says, eventually they get water-logged...carry plenty of extras if it's the one that works!

My favorite is still good old Gerke's Gink...

No matter how big the one you just caught is, there's always a bigger one out there somewhere...

Also: some patterns float better than others, such as the Wulff series of dries...LOTS of hackle!
