I received a Darbee Cahill Dun neck from Feather Emporium the other day, it's gorgeous, stiff barbs, wide variety of sizes, plenty of feathers. I got to wondering, though, where are the Darbee genetic necks coming from these days? Researching it on google turned up very few results, does anyone have any insight?

From an egg. :-)

Sorry, I couldn't resist. Whiting acquired Darbee eggs years ago and Feather Emporium has been buying all of them each season. At least, that is the last I knew.

Here is an in-depth PDf on hackle genetics.. http://cgtu.org/documents/publications/genetic_hackle.pdf

Harry Darbee used to raise roosters in a few pens behind his house on old Route 17 just outside Roscoe, NY. When I met Harry in the mid 1960's he had already abandoned his interest in roosters and the pens were growing over with grass. It's kind of hard to believe there are genetically pure roosters left from his early delving into raising stiff hackled birds unless the cocks have been cloistered away from any outside infiltration with other gene pools.
