Next weekend i'll be in Hagerstown MD. Wife wants to see tree color, I'm fly fishing. I know little about where to fish for trout there. I know there is a fly shop in town. Please set me in the right direction to fish any strems and rivers close to town. Thanks

I think your only option is Beaver Creek a limestoner just south of town. Never fished it though. Falling Springs is in Chambersburg only a few minutes (20 or so) up 81. Then the next closest would be Big Spring in Newville another 15-20 minutes north on 81.

Like I said I've never fished it so I can't tell you what to expect. But let us know how you do.

Hunter,
Big Hunting Creek might be another option. It is in Catoctin Park near Thurmont MD. This is the area near Camp David. There are some nice shops in Thurmont as well as 2 wonerful buffett type resturaunts.

The creek itself is heavily stocked and is ever bit the mountain freestoner.

Beaver is a classic meadow type spring creek with tons of conflicted currents and glassy pools. Both streams get hammered in terms of fishing pressure as they are pretty much the only game for trout in the area.

If you aren't strictly looking for trout. The Potomac is a terrific smallmouth fishery and is reasonably accessible. Attractions for the non angler would include Harper's Ferry and assorted accesses to the C&O canal which has 180 miles of very reasonable walking/biking.

Hope that is helpful.

Leaf peeping should be about prime as well. The frost last night really has the leaves falling today but you will be 30 or so miles further south so it may still be good.

If you do hit Beaver try hopping some sculpins down the channels in the cress. You only need 2 colors: black and white in #6-10. I prefer a shenks sculping with the spun deer head and 2-3 shot about 4" up the leader. Just sayin'.
