Posts: 5Hey guys, I’m a couple months into fly fishing and I’m having the time of my life! My wife and I moved to Silver City NM and I’ve been fishing the Gila River. I’ve had relative luck with streamers but I’m excited to learn about matching the hatch in the area. I’ve found plenty of info on the hatch of other rivers and bodies of water around NM, but can’t for the life of me find anything about the Gila system.

What resources do you use for hatches charts? If I can’t find anything out there, I’ll have to do my own research: how would you suggest starting that process?

Thanks!

I don't know much about hatches in your area, but your best bet would be to look for the most popular fisheries nearby (especially at a similar latitude and altitude) and see if any websites or fly shops focusing on those have a hatch chart. Your river will probably be fairly similar. However, I've found that in many cases the hatches I see aren't actually the species listed on the hatch charts anyway, so trial-and-error is probably the way to go. If you plan to be in the area for a while, start taking pictures and keeping notes of size/color/type of insect at different types of year, especially the ones that produce fishable hatches. In the meantime, hopefully you can fish often enough to let the previous trip be a guide to what flies to bring on the next trip.
