Trout Prey Videos
One of the most important things to a choosy trout is the one thing my close-up pictures can't show: motion. Fly tyers imitate motion by using lively materials and fly fishers imitate it with subtle rod-work, but both need to understand how the real critters move. That's where these videos come in. Plus, they're fun to watch!
PhryganeidaeStarring: Phryganeidae Caddisfly Larva Shot: Mar 1, 2004 Added: Mar 31, 2006 Format: WMV file Dimensions: 320x240 Camera: C740UZ |
| This is one of the only caddisfly genera which easily leaves and re-enters its case. I caught two of them fighting each other over this one... it's quite funny! |
Hex HatchStarring: Mayfly Species Hexagenia limbata Shot: Jun 18, 2005 Added: Mar 31, 2006 Format: WMV file Dimensions: 320x240 Camera: C740UZ |
| This video shows just how blizzard-like the Hexagenia limbata hatch can be. |
Winter Spring-Mouth TroutStarring: Shot: Jan 13, 2007 Added: Jan 30, 2007 Format: WMV file Dimensions: 320x240 Camera: C740UZ |
| In mid-January I visited the mouth of a heavily spring-fed tributary to a favorite trout stream, and hundreds of brookies were stacked up there enjoying the warmer water. The video quality's not very good, but it's amazing how the fish stack up. |
Dragonfly Nymph Scooting AroundStarring: Gomphidae Dragonfly Nymph Shot: Jan 13, 2004 Added: Mar 31, 2006 Format: WMV file Dimensions: 320x240 Camera: C740UZ |
| Dragonfly nymphs propel themselves through the water with a miniature jet engine, taking water in below their mouths and shooting it out their back ends. You can see the ripples from the jet out this one's back in this video. |

IsonychiaStarring: Isonychia bicolor Mayfly Nymph Shot: Jan 19, 2004 Added: Mar 31, 2006 Format: WMV file Dimensions: 320x240 Camera: C740UZ |
| These nymphs may be the best swimmers of all North American mayflies. |
Another HexageniaStarring: Hexagenia limbata Mayfly Nymph Shot: Mar 1, 2004 Added: Mar 31, 2006 Format: WMV file Dimensions: 320x240 Camera: C740UZ |
PteronarcysStarring: Pteronarcys dorsata Stonefly Nymph Shot: Feb 7, 2004 Added: Mar 31, 2006 Format: WMV file Dimensions: 320x240 Camera: C740UZ |
Ephemera 2Starring: Ephemera simulans Mayfly Nymph Shot: Jan 13, 2004 Added: Mar 31, 2006 Format: WMV file Dimensions: 320x240 Camera: C740UZ |
| This little Ephemera nymph swam around for a while and tried to burrow into the sand in my photography tank. |
Damselfly Nymph on the ProwlStarring: Calopteryx Damselfly Nymph Shot: Jan 31, 2004 Added: Mar 31, 2006 Format: WMV file Dimensions: 320x240 Camera: C740UZ |
| Damselfly nymphs are among the most effective invertebrate predators in freshwater. You have to see one in motion to get a feel for their slow, deliberate style of stalking. |
Leptophlebia NymphStarring: Leptophlebia cupida Mayfly Nymph Shot: Feb 2, 2004 Added: Mar 31, 2006 Format: WMV file Dimensions: 320x240 Camera: C740UZ |
| In angling books, Leptophlebia mayfly nymphs have a reputation as poor swimmers. In reality, they're very adept swimmers, much moreso than most other mayfly nymphs categorized as "crawlers." |
