Posts: 442	OK, enough of this cheeseball nonsense there are some purists among us.May I suggest adding some of your favorite hackle, dubbing and fibers to cottage, ricota, brie, roquefort, mozzarela, colby, montery, jack, chedder, gouda, jarleberg, parmesan, romano, asiago, swiss and gruyere to name a few. And there you have it quite a spread that should match about any hatch. For those inclined toward the nymph add a dip.

One Mile South of Lake LeBoeuf Posts: 218	As a transplanted PA native who now resides and fishes in the Upper Midwest, I'd like to suggest that this cheeseball thing is the least of our worries. There are directional parking vigilantes loose on the trout streams of the Badger State. I know this because I met one this year on the water. I was plunking along moving from pool to pool on one of my favorite streams in the Sand County region of WI moving the odd fish here and there. So far, I had released a 23" inch brown even though I had to total the lengths of the four fish I had caught so far in order to be able to say so...:) I was getting ready to make yet another cast into a promising flat behind an instream boulder and see if I could convert my 23 incher into a 29 incher when a guy wearing everything on the last 40 pages of the LL Bean fishing catalog staggered from the thick stand of birch on the bank to my right. I couldn't believe he was able to remain upright... "Hey, You!", he yelled. "Me?", I asked. But looking around, there was no one else there. So, it had to be me.... "Yeah", he thundered. "What are you doing up here above the bridge?" "Umm, fishing..?", I offered. "Is that OK?" He didn't seem happy with me, so I thought I'd start out sort of conciliatory. I could always get arrogant later if need be and I had an opportunity to put my rod down and pick up a big rock. Big rocks and arrogant go together. "Well, you're parked on the wrong side of the road to be fishing upstream. You're supposed to park on the same side of the bridge as the water you will be fishing. You're parked on the downstream side of the bridge, so you shouldn't be up here.." "Oh.... Well, I didn't know. When did this go into effect?", I asked. "It's ALWAYS been that way", he explained. Now finding out that at the least, this tradition pre-dated the Magna Carta and possibly was even on the tablets Moses carried down from the mountain didn't make me feel any better. Still, I've read that it is good strategy to placate a lunatic, so I told him: "Well, I'm from Pennsylvania and we haven't been out here all that long. So, I didn't know, you see.." He nodded as if this would have to do for an explanation on my part, pathetic though it be, and it appeared as if the crisis had passed. So, moderately emboldened, I asked him: "You from around here, huh?" He said, "Hell no, I'm from Columbia, Missouri. But my sister lives in Wautoma" (a nearby town). He nodded again as if to say, how's that for credentials... I said: "Well, say no more..." which brought another nod. Before the urge to make a grab for the aforementioned big rock and attempting to brain him overwhelmed me, I looked down at my wrist, where there was nothing but arm hair, no watch and I said, "Oh my, look at the time. Gotta go!" and took off for the car. In retrospect, I probably should have tried to brain him...:) In any event, beware! They're out there and you just never know when or where they'll show up next. Next time, it could be you working your way up Fishing Creek or Pine at Galeton or nailing smallies on the Juniata at Port Royal and some guy from Winston-Salem pops up and demands to know why you didn't hang a blue flag on your windshield to indicate you were not wearing cleated felts...

I have fly fished all over WI on numerous troutstreams. including around Wautoma. and I have never heard of that before. Maybe that guy from Missouri got hit by a large flying cheese ball downstream on some "pressured waters" and was knock senseless.

Site Editor "Bear Swamp," PA Posts: 1636	Lee, Sorry to hear that you fell for the old directional parking scam. It's clever (and obviously effective). I'd also recommend that you be on the lookout for the old no fishing on the second Tuesday (or Wednesday, or Thursday, etc.) of the month scam. And I must warn you to beware of anglers who rush up to you with a crazed look in their eyes and breathlessly ask, "Have you heard that there's a tremendous hatch of Deletus ignorati [also known as the Blue Doofus Dun] about three miles upstream, and the fish are going absolutely nuts?!!" Just to further disguise their malicious intent, such scammers usually add that they will be heading upstream just as soon as they notify their buddies who are fishing down around the bend. And often, to heighten the sense of urgency, they warn you to hurry because the BDDs are known to bring every fish over 20" to the surface, but the hatch doesn't last very long. :) Unless, of course, you were somehow being serious. In that case, in spite of not wanting to encourage the strange and violent tendencies that Shawn and Louis have just revealed on another thread, I'd recommend the rock.

I pulled into an empty parking spot along the river.I got out of the truck, walked around to the back and started to insert myself into my waders. All of a sudden a car comes to a screaching stop right along side of me, complete with out of state plates. I watched in complete amazement as the driver emerged fully outfitted, waders on rod in hand, and sprinted to the waters edge. I couldn't believe what had just happened. I removed my waders, went to the glove compartment, and retrieved my valvecore tool. I loosened not one but two figuring he had only one spare.

Oscoda, MI Posts: 1120	Concerning "Directional Parking Nazis" and other types who think they "own" public water: Ask him exactly where this "regulation" can be found. Sir, would you please show me the sign that says that? Should he become irate at that question, mention that you always thought that fly fisherman were a polite and courteous lot, but now you have your doubts. Should he become even more irate, find a rock of a size that you can throw hard with good accuracy. After all, you don't want to get too close, lest he tries to hurt you or he's carrying some contageous disease. Make sure you are actually being threatened so you can claim self defense in a court of law. I once fished a river here in MI - OK, I admit, with spinning tackle - a few times, with considerable success on largemouth, smallmouth, yellow perch, and rainbow trout (how's that for a species mix?). Twice when I was out there, I bumped into an older gentleman who was also fishing. I asked him how the fishing was, and he said, "Oh, terrible! I haven't caught a thing all day!" Which was such an obvious bald-faced lie that I felt like saying, "Gee, you must SUCK at it! I've caught this and that and..." I have no idea why he thought that would discourage me from fishing there, when I knew the obvious truth. Share the waters, people! And don't forget, fly fishers are generally a polite, courteous lot... Jonathon P.S. If anyone ever harasses you while onstream, tie on a nice, heavy, weighted streamer on a big, sharp hook. Then sink it deep into his hide on your next cast. If this fails, go get your spinning rod and put on a heavy Daredevle or three-treble pike plug, and repeat the above. Who says you can't fight back? P.P.S. ALWAYS tell the truth. Getting caught in a lie - as above - makes you look like a huge IDIOT.

Interlochen, Michigan Posts: 22	This post is in response to the above topic which seems to be about our fellow sportsman harrassing one another. The whole thing - sportsman, non sportsman, property owners, etc. that think they own public water. I moved to Northern Michigan for two reasons, Trout fishing, and Trout fishing. With miles of state land bordering many, many streams, rivers, and creeks, I made northern Michigan my home. For years I have been fishing the same rivers I grew up fishing, and for years I have met people on the river that think they own they own their own spot. I try not to let it bother me. Our time on the river (unless you are independantly wealthy or retired) is short and precious. I don't waste time dealing with harrassment. I have a simple and effective way of dealing with these simple minded idiots. 1. It sucks to have to do this, but take a cell phone with you. (It doesn't mean that you have to have it turned on.) 2. Take a small note pad, pen or pencil with you. 3. When someone starts to harrass you, listen to what they have to say, then ask for their name, address, and the best phone number to reach them at. -Now at this point this usually starts to spark some interest on their end. If they ask you why you are asking for that information, simply reply- "So it is easier for the D.N.R. to contact you regarding sportsman harrassment." In my experience, this situation usually results in the individual heading on their way. If the individual is insistant on continuing the harrassment, pull out your cell phone and ask them if they will still be here after you call the D.N.R. and have reported the individual. Just show them you are serious, and usually they will leave you alone. In Michigan, if you are in a navigatible river or designated Trout stream, there is no "private" water, as long as you are in the water. I have only had one person actually take me up on calling the authorities. The D.N.R. showed up, and gave the individual a little seminar on fisherman/sportsman harrassment. I could have pressed charges actually. But all in all, they learned their lesson. I have seen the individual on the river since then, and neither one of us has exchanged words, -which is fine by me. I like to be alone on the river anyways.

Oscoda, MI Posts: 1120	ANOTHER Michigander! I knew I couldn't be the only one! Great advice, Trevor. It certainly avoids the whole violence/self-defense in a court of law issue. And our DNR is quite serious about preventing harassment. Northern MI trout water ROCKS. I fished the Maple every summer from 1985-1990 (my U of M Bio Station days), and lived near West Branch, fishing the Rifle 2-5 times per week, for almost 4 years. Somehow I've never run into anyone who thinks they "own the water" while fishing, let alone been bombarded by rocks. My only incident with deception - an extremely POOR attempt at deception - is described in my previous post. Jonathon

Interlochen, Michigan Posts: 22	In response to your reply Jmd123, I have found the East Side of Lower Northern Michigan to be more laid back when it comes to fishing public water. The West Side of Northern Lower Michigan is a different story. I think it has everything to do with the Northern West side being geared towards Tourism in the Spring, Summer, and Fall. Lots of Week-end warriors. I have fished the Rifle river many times in my youth since it was one of the closest trout streams that I could get to when I first received my Drivers License back in the day. I grew up in Midland Michigan. Since I have moved to Interlochen, MI, I have not been back to the east side. I need to get back over that way someday.

Wisconsin Posts: 43	As I am almost 18, I have found that alot of the fly fisherman I run into, think they are more superior or higher on the todem-pole because I'm a young kid: they try to tell me that they are working this part of the river and that there is a couple of people up the river working a peice so I should look at trying to hit this spot a mile down the river, little do they know that they are standing on my property telling me where to fish, I could be a big prick and say, listen buddy your standing on my property tresspassing ( most aren't in the water) and your telling me what to do. Now, I don't consider me owning the river just because I own the land, I know it isn't right to think that the runs and pools and such on my property are mine because they aren't but I just wished that some people wouldn't be so near sighted. It frustrates me alot, I don't know if they think that because I am a teen that I don't know how to fly fish or know what I'm doing when, I think I'm pretty damn knowledged on my home river. I have also found out that treating land owners with respect helps you out alot as I have went door to door and gotten permission to fish certain parts of streams when other people are just walking out there with no permission.

And what do you do when the individual grabs your cell phone and throws it into the river and then goes about beating you on the head with his fists? That could be one scenario you had not thought about. It could happen and the guy could conceivably get back to his vehicle befor you regained your senses.
