Here is a style I have been messing with from the middle of last year till now, the Euro nymph. Just for the record, I am not at all interested in competition fly fishing, I do however have respect for a guy who can pluck trout out of a stream like they were in a barrel.

Anyway, among the hundreds of "new" flies that are designed every year since these competitions have been gaining popularity, these have really caught my eye. The guy who invented them calls them "Glitter numphs", and rightfully so.

Hook, Hanak competition
Tail, coq Deleon
Body, metallic thread mixed colors. coated with epoxy
Collar, spiky hair, rabbit, squirrel, etc
Bead, tungsten

Looks a bit like the Lightning Bug that was very popular in MT about six years ago.

The top right one is similar to the PBR fly out of Blue Quill Angler in Colorado. Deadly fly!

Richard...Got Pat Dorsey coming to Michigan in May to speak at the banquet of the Michigan Fly Fishing Club.

Looking forward to it.

CJ, if those shiny, metallic flies don't work you can always hang them on the Christmas tree next year as ornaments. :-)

Funny you should mention the lightning bug Matt, that is exactly what I thought. I tie a very similar pattern with rainbow pearl crystalflash over red thread and then a collar of ice dub somewhere in the arena of the natural of the prominent species. Louis can attest to its effectiveness on wild browns esp the baetis version.
