This was a cool day. My son Ben here caught this brookie from a tributary
to a local system. We brought rods but were there to collect Stenonema's. I had know idea they were there. I have fished that system since I was six, and I have never seen a brookie in this water before. So right here is the very first city brookie. We are just out of the city by 2 miles.

Since this time we rebuilt allot of that water stretch, made spawning areas, removed all the dead wood blocking the path. In the fall we caught some and put them closer to each other for spawning. This past spring Trout unlimited made a public posting saying Brooktrout found in the main waterway first time since 1958..There are now hundreds in that tributary and you guys are now the only ones that know. They are like my own kid well protected.

This is the kind of small waters we often fish.

That is a nice looking little creek, especially with brookies in it!

Jonathon

P.S. I see your son shares your penchant for camo... ;oD
No matter how big the one you just caught is, there's always a bigger one out there somewhere...

You're right Jonathon.

I have been heavily experimenting with it since the early 80's as part of my overall presentation and it makes a huge difference especially in small stream environments. All of our camping equipment is camo and military grade. I actually have a big chapter in the book I was writing called; The value and art of being a predator. Its how important it is in getting extremely close.

We spend weeks at a time deep in the bush in the great home of the brooktrout.
We also like that animals do not find us intrusive and trust us, oftentimes
giving us many opportunities to have very close encounters with them.

Mack, I've long gone with dull colors and "earth tones" for my fishing - though I do wear my Detroit Redwings jacket in the winter while I'm skiing (figure I'm easier to spot if crippled in the snow!) and during hunting seasons (and I get a LOT of hunters in my "backyard", e.g., the Au Sable River trails through the Huron National Forest). But I've never gone camo during fly fishing. Hmmm, I've even got some old Army face-paint...which would bring back memories of ROTC at the University of Michigan!

Seriously, though, in those REALLY small-stream situations, I can see the advantage. Funny thing, though, my kayak is bright yellow (easy to spot in distress, bought it for my first Isle Royale trip back in 2000 and I thought I should be highly visible!), yet in my favorite brookie pond (opening in a week and a half!) they don't seem to mind the color, so long as I am slow and quiet. And, of course, have the right fly on the end of my leader!
