The entomologists here will know more about what it eats, but I believe dragonfly nymphs are carnivorous, and eat other water creatures. To see what it will turn into, use the Google search function at http://www.google.com and search dragonfly insect. I believe you will get pictures of the adult.

Is it not an art to deceive a trout with an artificial fly? A trout! that is more sharp-sighted than any hawk . . . and more watchful and timorous than your high-mettled merlin is bold!

Posts: 141Dragonflies are fierce predators. They do, as Louis points out, eat other invertebrates. They eat everything from chironomid midge larvae, to damselfly nymphs, and even small fish. In lakes where fish are absent, dragonflies are often the apex predator. To get a picture of the adult, do a search for "clubtails" (if you found a dragonfly nymph like the one pictured). This is the common name of the gomphid family due to the enlarged, club-like, distal portion of the abdomen (of the adult).

Thanks, David. I did the "clubtail" search and learned a bit more about these bugs.
