Does anyone know what would be a good prey to immitate in a fly to catch hold over trout on the Guadalupe river? Not going until April , but I wanted to start getting some ideas. This will be my first trout fishing trip and the local guides say they catch some nice holdover trout from time to time but on no consistant pattern.Just wondering what would a 3lb or more trout feed on in central Texas.
Thanks, Fred

Fred, try this: http://www.guadalupefly.com/hatch.html
(BTW, the photo of the "Blue Wing Olive" on that page appears to be a Trico dun, but baetids are probably important at times.)

You can probably get some good info on the Guad from either Gruene Outfitters or the Guadalupe River chapter of TU.

http://www.grueneoutfitters.com

http://www.grtu.org

I don't want to sound too discouraging, but I've never particularly liked fishing the Guad. (granted it's been years since I've been there). I've talked to guys who have had great days there, but I've never had one. I've been skunked there much more often than not (and people who fish with me a lot will tell you that hardly ever happens).

The other issue there is access. One option: GRTU purchases leased access points for their members; from their site it looks like currently to take advantage of this you must be a "supporting member" ($12) and pay an annual "Lease Membership Fee" ($95). Your other option is to pay someone to let you park and access the river; the last time I went (probably 7 years ago) that ran about $20/outing. Once you are in the river, you pretty much have to stay in it or you'll be trespassing. One time I thought I'd be able to circumvent this when I found a good pull-off on the side of the road, but when I got back to my car I found the local constable's business card on my windshield with a note that said if they ever saw my car parked there again, they would tow it - and no, it was not parked illegally.

With the escalating price of gas, along with the other hassles/costs of the trip, I finally decided I wasn't going to drive that far and pay that much for very marginal fishing over stocked fish.

All of that said, I sincerely hope you have a GREAT trip.

After reading Flatstick's post, I'm inclined to suggest that you hire a guide if you can afford it. If you hire a good one she or he will know things about what will work and where the fish are that are very hard to figure out if you're fishing there for the first time. Unless you get lucky. Now, we all know that that happens sometimes, but you will increase the odds a lot if you get local experience on your side. That said, I'll still wish you best of luck with or without a guide.

Thanks guys , I 'm going to New Brunsfel for the 2010 FFF Gulf Coast Council Conclave April 8th and have a local to guide me once there. He said he had flies for me but I like to see what I can come up with on my own. The sites you guys have listed should get me pointed in the right direction.Caught my first smallmouth last year in Arkansas and hope to at least catch one trout on my first and only trout trip this spring.
Thanks again ,
Fred

If you have a local who is knowledgeable about the water, bugs, and access points, you're way ahead of the game on the Guad.

You mentioned Arkansas - have you fished the Little Missouri by any chance? It's a place I've considered going, but haven't had the chance to get to yet; from what I've read, a lot of people from your neck of the woods go up there to trout fish.

I haven't , but know many that have. On La.flyfishing , the catchmeister can answer any questions you have on the little mo. I went to Fayetteville to watch my son compete at AU . I wanted to go trout fishing while I was up there , but after driving 11.5 hours and a tight schedule all I could manage was to find a close stream and fish for smallies.
