My girlfriend casts amidst a mix of bugs hatching in mid-July from a Catskill stream.
These caddisflies were thick over the water in the evening on a cold, clear northwoods lake. They were in many places on the lake, all closer to the shady shore, which also was the shore most sheltered from the wind. I'm not sure which of those features attracted them.
Caddis on Catskill cobble.
I saw something strange flying around near the streambank, fluttering on and off the water's surface, so I went to check it out. I didn't recognize the wing profile in flight, and it's no surprise! These two caddisflies were joined mating, and they were very reluctant to let go.

Can you spot the brook trout in this picture? This is a good example of how they seek cover when a danger (my camera) approaches.
This is my favorite picture of this school of brookies. Notice there are a few other fish mixed in, minnow family mostly. Near the bottom right there's a really big brookie. These trout were densely schooled up near a major spring source during the dead of winter.

This was the biggest dwarf dolly varden of the day, a mature male about 8.5-9" long, quite a bruiser for the creek he was in. He's the prettiest fish I've caught in a while.
This fish is also pictured in
this picture and
this one.
