A storm recedes over the boggy headwaters of a nice trout stream. I haven't seen any trout in this stretch, but it's a good place to collect burrowing mayfly nymphs.

I saw this porcupine cross the road behind me while I was watching from a bridge for some large trout I'd heard about. I ran back to the car for the camera and got quite close for a picture. Speed is not one of the noble porcupine's many virtues.

This tiny spring creek is extremely fertile, and I sampled many interesting insects I didn't find anywhere else. The water was completely open even though other nearby spring creeks were frozen over and the snow was three feet deep.
