Fly Imitations by Orvis
Like Brachycentrus, these very small mayflies usually inhabit water too warm and/or stagnant for trout. Their emergence behavior further reduces their importance. I have found no reports of important Centroptilum hatches on trout water.

Centroptilum album is the species most often mentioned in fly fishing literature.

Hatching Behavior

Time Of Day (?): Early Morning
Centroptilum mayflies emerge by crawling out onto shore, so the duns are unimportant.

Spinner Behavior

The duns molt into spinners the same day they emerge, and they fall spent (Spent: The wing position of many aquatic insects when they fall on the water after mating. The wings of both sides lay flat on the water. The word may be used to describe insects with their wings in that position, as well as the position itself.) right next to the bank after mating.

Nymph Biology

The nymphs prefer warm, slow water, usually outside of trout streams altogether but they may be found in shallow, stagnant backwaters where the trout are not.
